Hens House Publishing

You want to tell a great story. I'll help you shape it, polish it, and get it into the world.

You started writing because you had a story to tell. Somewhere between the first draft and the upload button, it turned into three full-time jobs. I built these services because I know exactly what that feels like, and because I wish someone had been there for me.

I’m a working independent author. Not a gatekeeper. Not an MFA looking down her nose at your genre fiction. Just someone who has been in the weeds of self-publishing since 2011 and came out the other side knowing how to help.

What I can help you with.

Manuscript Evaluation

A clear, honest read of where your manuscript actually stands — what’s working, what needs attention, and exactly what to fix before you go deeper. This is the right first step if you’re not sure whether your draft is ready for a full edit or if you just need someone to tell you the truth about it.

What you get: A detailed editorial letter covering strengths, weaknesses, and revision priorities. Genre expectations, pacing, trope delivery, and reader experience. A clear action plan for next steps. Optional follow-up call or email Q&A.

40,000 words — $400
60,000 words — $600
80,000 words — $800
100,000 words — $1,000

Turnaround: 2 to 4 weeks

Final quote based on actual word count. Manuscripts outside these ranges are welcome, just ask.

Developmental Editing

The deep story-level edit. Structure, character arcs, emotional payoff, pacing, stakes, whether your book is actually delivering what your genre readers came for. This is the most intensive editorial service, and the one that makes the biggest difference to the finished book.

What you get: In-manuscript comments on structure, scene effectiveness, character motivation, and pacing. A detailed editorial letter with major strengths, issues, and recommended revisions. A prioritized revision roadmap. A follow-up call or email within the support window.

60,000 words — $1,500
80,000 words — $2,000
100,000 words — $2,500

Turnaround: 4 to 8 weeks

Final quote based on actual word count. Manuscripts outside these ranges are welcome, just ask.

Line & Copy Editing

Sentence-level refinement that sharpens clarity, consistency, and voice without flattening what makes your writing yours. Grammar, punctuation, rhythm, flow — all of it, with your voice intact throughout.

What you get: Tracked changes for sentence-level improvements and corrections. Comments where explanation helps. A style sheet for character names, capitalization, and recurring editorial decisions. A clean manuscript ready for proofreading.

60,000 words — $1,050
80,000 words — $1,400
100,000 words — $1,750

Turnaround: 3 to 6 weeks

Final quote based on actual word count. Manuscripts outside these ranges are welcome, just ask.

Proofreading

The final pass before you hit publish. Typos, punctuation slip-ups, word-level errors, small formatting inconsistencies — anything that snuck through earlier rounds. Your last line of defense before launch.

What you get: Final pass on a near-final or formatted manuscript. Corrections for typographical, punctuation, and consistency issues. Light flagging of any obvious repeated errors.

60,000 words — $540
80,000 words — $720
100,000 words — $900

Turnaround: 1 to 3 weeks

Final quote based on actual word count. Manuscripts outside these ranges are welcome, just ask.

Interior Layout & Formatting

Professional interior layout for ebook, print, or both — clean, properly structured, and ready to upload to your platform of choice. Because a beautifully written book still needs to look right on the page.

What you get: Professional formatting for ebook, print, or both. Front and back matter placement. Basic file checks before delivery. Upload-ready files for major platforms.

Ebook only — $175
Print interior only — $225
Ebook + print bundle — $325

Turnaround: 1 to 3 weeks after receipt of final edited manuscript

Publishing Setup Coach

One-on-one screen-share sessions that walk you through everything between finished manuscript and live book — KDP setup, metadata, categories, keywords, pricing, distribution decisions. Especially useful if you’ve never done this before and the dashboard is making you want to throw your laptop.

What you get: Live coaching sessions with screen-share support. Guidance on metadata, categories, keywords, pricing, and setup steps. A checklist or recap after each session. Optional review of your live listing before publication.

Single session — $100 (60 to 90 minutes)
Three-session package — $250

Turnaround: Delivered over 1 to 4 weeks depending on your readiness

Why work with me?

What I bring to the table

Author-to-author perspective.
I’m actively building and marketing my own fiction catalog. I’m not advising from the outside looking in, I’m in it with you.

Genre awareness.
I write commercial fiction, so I understand reader expectations, trope delivery, and emotional payoff. I know what your readers are looking for because I write for readers just like them.

No gatekeeping.
I’m not here to judge your premise, your genre, or your process. Cozy romance, monster fiction, paranormal mystery… bring it. I’m here to help you make your book the best version of itself.

Business-minded.
Books are art and products. Your publishing outcome matters to me, not just the craft of the words.

Transparent pricing.
What you see above is what you pay. No surprise quotes, no vague “contact for rates.”

Clear process.
Every project starts with a written scope and intake so expectations are clear from the start. You’ll know what you’re getting and when.
